BOX lamp
spring 2017

BOX lamp is a dynamic mood light that can open and close to control the amount of light it emits. Its seeming solid exterior lifts up on internal hinges, creating a contrast between its apparent weight and the illusion of floating. When illuminated, the internal light cube glows through the veneer covered cedar frame, casting a beautiful, natural light, which can be dimmed and brightened by opening and closing each half of its exterior

testing hinging mechanisms

the design | conceptually resolved, functionally still a mystery
prototyping | resolving the hinge mechanism
first functional prototype: testing the keyhole locking hinge system

second functional prototype: refining the hinges, attaching to external box

construction | This lamp's primary design challenge was to create a lightweight, translucent exterior that could stay elevated on its hidden internal hinges, while maintaining its woodblock aesthetic. I resolved this challenge by building the exterior from a thin, cedar frame covered in paperback veneer. This creates the illusion of a solid block while still being translucent and very light.

building: final assembly | attaching internal and external boxes with printed hinges + attaching veneer
