'STROIDS | create your own galaxy

Fall 2016

This outer space themed building toy lets children create 3D space worlds in a tactile environment. Made up of platforms, rods, friction hinges, and 'STROIDS', kids can build creatively, even adding, adapting, and repairing this toy due to its standardized dowel and holes sizes. 'STROIDS, short for asteroids, was designed with a 7 year old co-creator, in partnership with fellow Emily Carr University grad, Benjamin Mills.

During our first full team brainstorming session, we learned that our co-creator was really into outer space, and that he seemed to like large scale, creative, building games in which he could include lots of his current toys and characters.

...and brought them back to our young co-creator.

After getting feedback from our co-creator and seeing the toy in action, we finalized the design and started production.

One of our main design challenges was creating strong hinges and lightweight asteroids so structures would hold their shape when assembled. We solved this issue with hollow asteroids designed in Pepakura and rubber tubing inset connection points that created a snug fight.
